Dandelion wine – is a healthy alternative to make dandelion wine using dandelion flowers, sugar, yeast, and citrus. Watch it here and see below for more details.
The process involves sterilizing your winemaking equipment with hot water. Collect dandelion flowers until you have 16 cups (2 kg) of dandelion flowers. Be sure to collect from a trusted area that hasn’t been sprayed with pesticides or frequently by animals. Clean up the flowers, removing all stems, and leafs (to avoid bitter wine).
- Go out and pick roughly a gallon of open, yellow dandelion blossoms, clean of stems and leaves, rinse clean.
- Using a large pot, cover blossoms with water.
- Heat up to just to boiling. Turn the heat off and let Dandelions stew for a few hours.
- Once cool, add the sugar, yeast, zest and juice of the lemons and oranges. Add such and stir until dissolved.
- Cover with a wash cloth or hand towel and put aside somewhere warm to ferment. You can transfer to a wine carafe or food quality fermentation pail (see video).
- Fermentation can take 10-14 days or until it stops bubbling.
- Without disturbing the sediment at the bottom of the pot, scoop out or siphon off your clear wine.
- Let mature for roughly 6 months in a cool dark place.
